Plot SummaryEdit

Philip K. Dick's 1968 novel Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep? takes place in the future, originally the future of 1992, but later updated to the future of 2021. It is a post-apocalyptic future where World War Terminus has left a radioactive Earth with most of the animals dead and most of the humans emigrated to Mars. The government, in order to provide a further impetus to leave Earth, gives an android servant to everyone who emigrates.

But a few of the androids, which are very like humans except lacking empathy, disapprove of their status, kill their masters, and flee to Earth seeking freedom. However, on Earth they are hunted and killed by bounty hunters like Rick Deckard. In order to discern the difference between humans and androids, Deckard employs the Voigt-Kampff test, designed specifically to detect the android's lack of empathy. But, as Deckard comes to realize, the differences between humans and androids are subtle, and, in some cases, perhaps not altogether that important.
